On December 1, 2009, I assumed the role of President of the
Exhibit Designers and Producers Association, an organization of over 400
exhibit industry suppliers from North America and 20 countries around the
globe. For the next year it will be my
honor and privilege to serve the industry in which I have been involved for the
last 35 years. Fortunately, I have a dedicated Board of Directors who volunteer
their time, energy and resources to help the exposition industry survive and
grow in these challenging times.
During my speech to the association, I challenged our
members to a "call to arms." This was not a call to battle, but a call to learning. We must learn how
to feel, think, and act differently and more productively. Today's world is more
difficult than 50 or even 10 years ago.Boundaries no longer exist.Geographically, socially, politically, and industrially
the rules of interaction and engagement are constantly changing. We must develop better ways
to deal with these changes.
Over the next year, I will be reporting on the activities of
the EDPA, TSEA, and the EIC (Exhibit Industry Council) on our work to open dialogue
and to promote face-to-face marketing and the knowledge
that trade shows work.My predecessor, Dan Cantor, stated: "A recession is a terrible thing to waste." I
add: "The exhibit industry is a terrible thing to throw away."Here is our call to arms: Sustainability and growth through education,
communication, and advocacy with others on a local, national, and international
scale.
Please become more involved with the exhibition industry: interact,
communicate, advocate, and by all means innovate. Let me know your thoughts, questions, and frustrations.I
look forward to hearing from you.
Until next time,

Event Spotlight
"VIP, The Experience:" Techtronic Industries International (makers of Ridgid, Ryobi, and Homelite tools) brought their brand message and some serious style to the Palms Hotel in Fabulous Las Vegas. Attendees for the media event included editors and writers for leading industry magazines, television networks, and websites, as well as VIP guests. The venue, a Sky Villa at The Palms Resort and Hotel, provided gorgeous views of the Vegas strip- and a few challenges.
JC Rose assisted with the logistical planning and execution of moving a 53ft. trailer worth of product and display components into a 30th floor, 6000 sq foot penthouse quickly and efficiently. Display stands and walls were designed to show off tools and display product information without drawing too much focus from the room decor. Another challenge of any hotel install is designing the event for maximum impact, but little or no residual effect on the physical space. The displays and stands had to support the weight of the tools and graphics without damaging or marking the floors, walls, or ceilings.
